Mountain House Holidays

This is another organisation I came across when perusing the BBC’s Thrillseeker website (see my post on the Calvert Trust).

Mountain House Holidays offer a range of walking and adventure activity holidays and breaks for people of all ages and abilities. Their aim is “to provide you with a holiday to remember whatever your age or ability” and they will tailor make a programme to individual preferences or for a group.

They operate from bases in the Derbyshire Peak District and Sierra Nevada mountains of Southern Spain and have personally tried and tested the holidays and activities with their team of qualified and experienced leaders and instructors.

If you are interested in learning skills to help you make the most of walking in the Derbyshire Peak District, they can show you the Dales around Foolow, the moors of the Dark Peak, or you can join one of the day navigation courses to help you learn map and compass or GPS navigation.

Activity holidays in the Peak District can include rock climbing, abseiling, canoeing, raft building and caving. They are able to cater for people of all ages including individuals with a learning disability. Mountain House Holidays “believe that people with a learning disability have so much to gain from the outdoor experience.” They also say that many of the people who have joined them “for a holiday or activity session have gained confidence, self reliance and a sense of achievement, as well as having lots of fun.” Sounds good to me. Take a look at the video.

The holidays in Southern Spain make the most of the walking and mountaineering, rock climbing and canyoning, which the Sierra Nevada mountains, Alpujarra and Lecrin Valley have to offer. Most holidays also include the opportunity to visit the Alhambra and city of Granada.

Their website is being developed as a resource for those who want to walk, climb or mountaineer in Spain independently. This will include guides to walking and rock climbing around Lanjarón, on the southern slopes of the Sierra Nevada, mainland Spain’s highest mountains, and gateway to the Alpujarra, some information about the Sierra Nevada national park, and accommodation in Lanjarón.
